History of the Institute of Visual Informatics (IVI)

Institute of Visual Informatics (IVI) was initiated in 2008. After several levels of meetings in the Faculty of Information Science and Technology, UKM JPPA, UKM Senate and UKM Board of Directors, the Institute of Visual Informatics was finally established in 10 February 2011. Professor Dato’ Dr. Halimah Badioze Zaman is appointed as the first director of the institute on 1st May 2011. The institute has seven staffs, of which six are academic staffs. The Institute of Visual Informatics is committed to be a leading Centre of Excellence in research and innovation in four thrust areas of visual informatics: Visual Computing, Computer Vision and Simulation, Real Time Virtual Image Processing and Social Informatics. The mission of IVI is to be a centre of excellence of choice in the field of Visual Informatics that is of global standing, by conducting frontier and cutting-edge research to lead new knowledge for better quality of life. To achieve the vision and mission, the institute strives to provide facilities and conducive environment for the development of human capital including the postgraduate research skills via MSc and PhD degrees as well as postdoctoral fellowships.
