Talk : What is a PhD? – A personal view
Speaker: Professor Dr. Wai Kiang (Albert) Yeap (Director for the Centre of Artificial Intelligence Research, Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand).
Abstract: This is, rightly so, an important question since the degree is (almost) the highest award given by any University. Yet, the answers one often get are, at best, mind-boggling or at worst, ineffectual. For instance, one often heard that a PhD must be an original piece of research that has helped advance one’s field of study in a significant way. This statement leaves many PhD students (and supervisors) debate for years the notions of originality and significance. In this talk, I would like to share my view of what a PhD is about and why it is not just any piece of research, no matter how original or significant. Audience participation is highly encouraged in this talk; so come and share your view. A Supplementary Talk: Professor Yeap will also take the last 15 minutes to present an overview of his work on developing a theory of spatial cognition using robots Speaker: Professor Yeap is the Director for the Centre of Artificial Intelligence Research at the Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand. He is passionate about doing research in aI; his emphasis is on what Intelligence is rather than making machines that appear to be intelligent. Currently he is working on a theory of spatial cognition (using robots) and a theory of how children understand language. He publishes his work in the AI Journal, IJCAI and Cognitive Sciences.
